Gigabyte busts out M1125 netvertible ahead of Computex

Gigabyte’s just let its Computex ‘cat’ out of the bag, and while most of it is stuff we’ve already seen plenty of, there was one new addition. The 11.6-inch M1125 netvertible boasts a high res 1,366 x 768 display, an Intel Calpella chip, USB 3.0 and an optical disc drive. This little guy also has a new fangled docking station and a full sized keyboard to boot. We don’t have anything resembling full specs yet, nor do we have pricing or availability information — though we get the feeling we’ll be seeing plenty more of this one in the week to come. PLX USB Duet: your netbook is now a cumbersome iPad keyboard
We preface this post by saying we don’t know how practical this really is, but PLX’s idea of using a netbook’s keyboard to type on the iPad is definitely an intriguing one. How does it all work? Well, it relies on the company’s USB Duet technology, but the setup isn’t exactly what we’d call streamlined. You’ll need a netbook like the Fujitsu MH380 or NEC LaVie Light with the built-in PLX chipset / mini-USB port, an iPad with the camera connection kit, and of course the applicable USB Duet software. Regardless, the demo we saw today at the Netbook Summit worked fairly well. When all was said and done, we laid the iPad on top of the netbook’s screen and we were able to use the keyboard to type in Safari and in Notes faster than when we were pecking on the virtual keyboard. Additionally, PLX says the same USB feature enables you to use the netbook’s speakers as well as transfer files from the iPad to the laptop without iTunes (we should note here that USB duet also allows you to hook up a netbook to other laptops to transfer files, etc.). Truth is, we could debate the value of this iPad hook-up for quite a few hours, but instead we’ll just direct you to the video and press release after the break, and then let you duke it out for yourselves in the comments. It’s hard to differentiate yourself in the netbook world nowadays — pretty much every manufacturer is trudging along the same Pine Trail, with the same one, maybe two, gigabytes of RAM and 160GB to 320GB in storage. So ASUS, the original gangster of this sector, is aiming to wow consumers with a scintillating 13.5 hours of autonomous use courtesy of its 6-cell 63Wh battery pack. The EeePC 1015P and 1015PE differ only in aesthetics, with both sporting 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 screens and Atom N450 processors. No, that’s not going to break any performance records, but if that longevity number proves true, we suspect there’ll be plenty of eager buyers out there. Price and availability haven’t yet been revealed, but ASUS doesn’t usually keep us waiting so look out for these in the very near future. ( Source )
Wi-Fi Alliance and WiGig sync up for 60GHz WiFi

We already heard that Hitachi, Panasonic and Toshiba would be delivering 60GHz wireless products in the latter half of this year, but it looks like a whole heap of other companies will be as well after this bombshell drops. The Wi-Fi Alliance and WiGig (which just nailed down a final spec in December) have finally got their respective ducks in a row, and thanks to a new partnership announced today, 60GHz WiFi products are now possible. For those unaware, 60GHz airwaves are typically reserved for high-bandwidth applications — think streaming a Blu-ray flick from a player to an HDTV sans any cabling. The two will be working in unison in order to create a next-generation certification program for products operating in the 60GHz band, and best of all, a “significant portion, if not all, of these devices are expected to also support traditional WiFi networking in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.” There’s no mention of when exactly the first 60GHz WiFi wares will begin to ship, but we can certainly say we’re eager to update this here tutorial when tri-band becomes reality. AMD to ship chips in 109 laptops this year?

Fresh off its world-dominating streak in the desktop graphics market, AMD set sights on notebook territory; now, according to “people familiar with the matter,” the company’s scored a big win there, too. Sources told Reuters that the chipmaker’s notebook CPUs will power 109 different laptops over the months to come, compared to only 40 laptop models last year. It seems part of the newfound success is attributable to HP — which announced twelve mainstream ‘tops just last week — but we’re more interested in the mysterious quad-core Phenom II X4 machines leaking out the likes of Acer and Dell. What can we say? We’re suckers for a surprise, especially of the portable, multi-threaded variety.
ASUS Introduces A New 8.9-Inch Netbook

ASUS has added a new 8.9-inch netbook to its range with the introduction of the Eee PC 900AX. This mini laptop sports an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 LED backlight display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, an Intel GMA 950 graphics card, a 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a 0.3MP webcam, a card reader, WiFi, a 4-cell battery and runs on Windows XP Home Edition OS. Pricing and release date are still unknown at the moment.
