Verizon teams up with Redbox to take on Netflix, Amazon and Hulu

It was rumored that Verizon might buy Netflix out to gain a larger foothold in the streaming video service, but alas, the company’s settled on a partnership with Costco’s Redbox to create a new “compelling” entertainment on demand service.

Taiwan’s many-legged ‘fibrous’ skyscraper comes from another world

Austrian architecture firm SOMA has this radical design for the skyline of a city in Taiwan: the “Multiple Natures” fibrous tower, a 1,080-foot spire that twists up into bulbous pods from a base of eight support stalks. Believe it or not, the concept isn’t as far-fetched as it looks up front, either.

Toy building blocks now eco instead of day-glow

There are some new stack and lock bricks on the scene. Lego bricks are classic toys, but there’s no denying these re-envisioned “Earth Blocks,” made partially from recycled materials — coffee beans, cedar sawdust and cedar bark — are a fantastic idea.

Chirpy smoke detector saves lives and is cute as hell

Smoke detectors are (or should be) a part of everyone’s home, and yet they’ve never really added to the décor. Of course their main function is to save lives, but there is no reason they can’t be designed to look good like this adorable little Chick-a-Dee.

Amazon might open its own retail store to sell Kindles and e-books

Pinch yourself if this sounds crazy. Amazon, the world’s undisputed online retail champ is said to be considering a move into retail with a pilot store in Seattle that’ll focus primarily on selling the Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablet alongside exclusively published books and e-books.
