Tesla deal with Toyota is ‘not formal,’ $50m investment dependent on IPO

Tesla Motors seemed to have scored quite the coup earlier this month when it landed a deal with Toyota, but it now looks like things might be a tad more complicated than first suggested. According to Tesla, there is no formal deal with Toyota on electric car development, only an “intention to cooperate,” and Toyota’s proposed $50 million investment in the company isn’t a done deal either. It’s apparently dependent on Tesla’s IPO happening before December 31st of this year — if that falls apart or gets pushed back, the deal is off. What is officially happening, however, is Tesla’s $42 million purchase of a closed Toyota plant in San Francisco that will be used to produce the Model S sedan — which itself is apparently still set to go into production in 2012, and run about $49,900.

Massive Gallardo crash in Super Trofeo leaves Bartocc in intensive care

The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Cup saw a massive accident during Round 4 of the season. From what we can tell, the number 22 Gallardo LP560-4 driven by Giorgio Bartocci got off into the gravel on the last turn before the front straight. It’s unclear whether Bartocci was nudged by another racer or whether a mechanical failure caused the slide, but either way, the car hit the wall at considerable speed and nearly disintegrated on impact.

The driver’s side door sprung open as the car slid down the tarmac, and Bartocci could be seen flailing outside the vehicle. When it finally came to a stop, the Raging Bull turned into a raging fireball. Fire crews initially took longer than expected to pull the driver from the wreckage and were seen using underpowered fire extinguishers to battle the blaze. The FIA is expected to investigate the incident. Amazingly, Bartocci survived the ordeal and is currently in intensive care.

Lamborghini canceled the remainder of the event and rounds six and seven have been indefinitely nixed as well. Hit the jump for a video of the incident.

Rendered Speculation: Ask and ye shall receive, Hyundai Sonata Shooting Brake

It’s always nice to know that someone is listening to your ramblings. A couple of days ago when we saw a speculative rendering of a station wagon version of the new Kia Optima, we postulated that its cousin the Hyundai Sonata would make a great Shooting Brake. Well, we’ve now seen two renderings of a long-roof Sonata from two different artists and we are sold on the concept.

The image to the right was generated by the same Theophilus Chin who created the Optima wagon. Don’t get us wrong, we generally love the Mercedes-Benz “Shooting Break” concept we saw in Beijing. However, unlike the designers at Mercedes-Benz, Theo understands the history of the Shooting Brake and rendered a proper two-door plus hatch, and it works beautifully with the Sonata’s fluidic sculpture design. Check out Theo’s other work at his site.

We’d also like to thank Jon Riska who, while acknowledging his less advanced photoshopping skills, still produced the very handsome four-door Sonata wagon above. If you’d like to try your own hand, send your images along to tips at autoblog dawt com and we may add them to the reader gallery.

Note to Hyundai America CEO John Krafcik: We know you check out Autoblog. Come on, you know you want to build one of these!

Craigslist Find of the Day: Rare Lancia LC2 Group C racer

 lancialc2002-00.jpg

Last sold on these shores in 1982, the Lancia brand has pretty much slipped into obscurity for most Americans, but there was a time when Lancia was on top of the world. From the mid-’70s to the early-’90s, Lancia racked up an impressive tally of international race wins and championships with its doorstop-like Stratos and Montecarlo successor.
