Grand Canyon Table Shows How Art Can Flow Into Design

Some designs start with practical realities, others with artistic inspiration, but some mix the two from start to finish, like this hybrid glass-and-wood Grand Canyon Table.

Amit Apel introduces a river of glazing sandwiched between wooden panels that is neither devoid of use nor specific to any particular purpose.

The result is a visual highlight as well as a place one could imagine would evolve a specific meaning or usage over time – perhaps that is where you put a piece of sculpture, or the book you are currently reading, versus the general-purpose rest of the surface area.

Wild Industrial Vases Add Some Modern Flair to Your Table

Concrete and wire are perhaps two of the least likely materials for making flower vases. But thanks to Thai designer Decha Archjananun, they have come together in this lovely form.

They’re called Weight Vases, and they bring together two industrial materials for a surprisingly elegant result.

The vase bases are made of concrete, which holds the water and keeps the whole assembly upright.

Wire frames of differing shapes and heights support stems in whatever configuration you choose, creating a graceful juxtaposition between lovely flowers, rough concrete and sparse wire.

When you become an adult, it seems most people switch from Etch-A-Sketches to zen gardens. Finally, someone has combined the best of both — doodling on a large scale — with a dose of technology added in for all us geeks.

Force Feeding: Seesaw Table Only Seats Dinners for Two

Want to eat alone? Well, too bad – this is not designed to let you do that. If there is a line in design between facilitating and forcing users, well, this certainly crosses it.

Created by dutch design student Marleen Jansen, there is just no getting around dual dining – if someone stands up to leave, the other person has to as well … or drops to the ground if they fail to follow.

Perhaps, like the original seesaws for children, there is a lesson in all of this about being polite, but etiquette aside, it would simply be fun to watch how people interact with such a thing in public, too.
